The name GORE-TEX® is synonymous with quality, reliability and consistency, especially when it comes to the gear people trust when skiing and snowboarding in the backcountry. This is why in 2014 Oyuki began the task of applying for a GORE-TEX® license, which would allow us to use their waterproof and breathable membranes in our gloves and mittens. As it turned out, the journey we embarked on to receive this licence ended up being nearly as strenuous as the mountain adventures our apparel is designed to undertake. Luckily, however, it was also just as rewarding…

Why we chose the GORE-TEX® technology.

Gloves and mitts engineered with GORE-TEX® membranes are durably waterproof, windproof and breathable – guaranteed. They offer enduring weather protection and comfort, balanced heat transfer and optimum moisture management – even in harsh conditions. As a result, your hands stay warmer when it’s cold, and drier when you perspire.

The insert – or membrane – itself is an extremely thin layer of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene, which has over 9 billion pores per square inch. These pores are 20,000 times smaller than a water droplet, but 700 times larger than a water vapor molecule. This technology is what makes GORE-TEX® products both waterproof and breathable.

This finely tuned technology is the reason why the GORE-TEX® brand is trusted the most by skiers and snowboarders and, therefore, the membrane Oyuki uses in selected models of our ski and snowboard gloves and mitts.

Perfect partners

While it was easy for us to choose GORE-TEX® technology it was a much harder process convincing them to choose us. Back in 2014 OYUKI was still a fledgling brand and yet to branch into markets beyond Japan and Australia. W.L. Gore & Associates (Gore) is renowned for, understandably, being very selective when it comes to the brands it licenses. For two years Oyuki corresponded with Gore while, at the same time, we refined our design and increased our production numbers. Finally, persistence paid off and Gore agreed that our product was up to standard. Our license was granted in 2016, ensuring that Oyuki's gloves and mitts are up there with the best in the world.

The testing process.

Now each time a new Oyuki mitt or glove model is created, it is subjected to rigorous testing before it qualifies to carry the GORE-TEX® label. First a sample, complete with the membrane, must be manufactured by our factory. Then it’s sent to Gore’s testing facility where they review it across a range of categories. These include:

Waterproofness: How well the product withstands water entry pressures encountered during severe weather and in demanding applications.

Lining retention: Ensuring the liner of the mitt or glove remains bonded when hands are extracted.

Construction: Whether the product is using the appropriate insert and if that insert is appropriately attached

Breathability: How well the product is able to let sweat escape in the form of moisture vapor.

The future

Once a model has passed the initial testing, it is subjected to on going testing every year to ensure standards are met throughout its lifetime. As a brand this is particularly valuable because it means we are constantly aware of how well our mitts and gloves are performing and can make changes based on Gore’s recommendations. For skiers and snowboarders, it means they can be confident that our GORE-TEX® ski and snowboard mitts will keep them warm, dry and on the mountain longer.
