During the winter of 2015/2016 we collaborated with Niseko based production company My House Pictures, hoping to capture the essence of what it’s like to live and ride in Niseko, the world’s premier powder destination. By following OYUKI’s team of riders we have documented a series of very different lives that have one thing in common. A deep love for the mountains. This formed the basis for our film “5 Niseko Stories”.
OYUKI’s team riders, Toshiya Kasuga, Nat Segal, Yohei Sasaki, Boen Ferguson, Harrison McInnes, Adam Kroenert, Charlie Steinbacher, Rikuto Ohashi and company founder Matt Hampton, are joined by Olympic snowboarder Jenny Jones and backcountry guide Owain Bassett.
Filmed on some of the best days of the season, “5 Niseko Stories” is a high definition snapshot of the conditions and terrain that inspire OYUKI’s unique range of snow accessories.
The film spans 5 very diverse stories. The first is “The Zone” which is shot beyond the ropes with Lincoln Taylor’s Big Wave Snow-cat Tours and Par Darlin’s ParPowParadise. The second is “Yohei Sasaki” (Local backcountry skier), the third “Nat Segal” (Australian big mountain skier), the fourth “Boen Ferguson”(Australian photographer) and the final “Toshiya Kasuga” (local backcountry snowboarder). The film takes viewers into the lives of each character and provides a look at winter in Niseko from a local’s and visitor’s perspective.
The soundtrack includes hit music from “Boy and Bear”, “Angus and Julia Stone” and “Hermitude”. Shot entirely in 5K widescreen, “5 Niseko Stories” is the second Niseko-based film from award winning photographer Shane Peel and follows on from his highly successful debut film “Snowsurf” . “5 Niseko Stories” is made possible thanks to OYUKI, Experience Niseko, Rhythm Japan and Sontimer Eyewear.
